Crenshaw / LAX Community Films Series: Randy's Donuts

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) is overseeing a major expansion of the region’s transportation network. Thanks in no small part to the passage of Measure R in 2008, Metro will spend upwards of $40 billion to relieve traffic and upgrade transportation infrastructure throughout the county over a 30-year period. 

One part of this massive endeavor is the 8.5 mile long Metro Crenshaw / LAX Transit Corridor Project, which will link the existing Metro Expo Line at Crenshaw and Exposition Boulevards with the Green Line’s Aviation / LAX Station. Preliminary construction began this past summer and the line is scheduled to open in late 2018.

As part of Metro’s effort to “illustrate the history, current needs and anticipation for rail in the community along this future alignment,” its Creative Services group teamed up with Mobolaji Olambiwonnu of Pasadena-based Dreamseeker Media to produce six short videos that highlight the roles transportation systems can play in people’s lives.

The fourth video in this series was just released and it caught my attention, since it features Randy’s Donuts, one of my family’s favorite LA area institutions. We’re particularly partial to their plain glazed and crumb donuts. If you have never tried their tasty treats, stop by on your next trip to or from LAX. 

This installment of the Community Films Series features the owners of Randy’s Donuts, the donut shop in Inglewood, CA known for its sweet confections and iconic oversized donut sign. Brothers Ron and Larry Weintraub bought the shop thirty-four years ago. In this installment, they consider how the future Crenshaw/LAX line will benefit their customers and other businesses along the planned alignment.
