Moving Image Art Presents - HUMAN ANIMAL

DateThursday, September 27, 2012 at 4:14PM | Share ArticleShare Article

This Friday Moving Image Art (MIA) presents HUMAN ANIMAL, a program that features “…performance based video art exploring relationships with the body, sexuality and sculpture.” The evening will showcase work by artists from around the country, including Rachelle Beaudoin, Heather Cassils, Lauren Cross, Diane Dwyer, Teri Frame, Sara Holwerdam and Jamie Sneider.

Two examples of what you'll experience if you attend this event:

  • In a six-part performance documentation, Teri Frame will transform herself by sculpting clay applied to her own head, exploring “…how Western ideas about the body have changed over time using familiar imagery from both the arts and sciences.”

  • “In The Obsession, Lauren Cross tears at her hair, sculpting it into one style after another, exploring perceptions of beauty.”

HUMAN ANIMAL is the fourth installment of this ongoing series, which is curated by Los Angeles based artist Alanna Simone and focuses on experimental film, video art, installation art, performance art, essay films and animation. While I am not personally familiar with the artists represented in this program, the time I spent on their respective web sites definitely piqued my interest. If you like art that makes you think, challenges your preconceptions and is both personal and political, you’re likely to find this a memorable evening. Check out the MIA web site for more detailed information about this engaging program.
