Los Angeles is Getting Dirty Looks

DateThursday, January 31, 2013 at 7:44AM | Share ArticleShare Article

Dirty Looks, a New York-based platform for queer experimental film and video, is returning to the West Coast for a second tour. While in Los Angeles, the organization will premiere never-before-seen work by Tom Rubnitz, which was discovered in the Video Data Bank archives at the Billy Wilder Theater. In association with LA FilmForum, they've also organized a program of contemporary queer portraits called Yesterday Once More, which will feature works by emerging artists made within the last two years.

Before those screenings, Dirty Looks and Little Joe magazine will present two free events at the Geffen Contemporary as part of the LA Art Book Fair. The first program will “…present a selection of films by visual artist and underground film legend Mike Kuchar. Twin brother of George, Mike has created an astounding body of illustration and film/video works since the brothers’ famed collaborative 8mm micro-epics in the 1950s. Mike Kuchar will be in attendance and a Q&A will follow the screening.”

The second program presents a work titled City of Lost Souls, by Rosa Von Praunheim. This film “…follows a mostly American cast through a Berlin of the 1980s, in a trans musical spectacular that has been described as ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch... in reverse.’”
