“Ladies of Animation” at GRworks

DateFriday, February 8, 2013 at 5:09PM | Share ArticleShare Article

As a longtime fan of animated films, I am very excited about a new show at GRworks that is opening this weekend titled Ladies of Animation. Curated by Gennie Rim, former artistic manager at Pixar and Disney and founder of the exhibition space, the exhibit will showcase the personal work of female artists from major studios including Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks.

The show will highlight a variety of work within the field of animation, including feature character design and story and visual development for films such as Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, Frankenweenie and Paperman. In keeping with the spirit of GRworks’ mission to bridge the gap between the creativity in commercial animation and fine art, it will also call attention to the artists’ impact beyond their studio projects by presenting a selection of their work in the areas of toy design, graphic novels and advertising.

Featured in the exhibition are: Victoria Ying, Sho Murase, Helen Mingjue Chen, Nicole Mitchell, Clio Chiang, Griselda Sastrawinata, Anna Chambers, Lorelay Bove, Claire Keane, Fawn Veerasunthorn, Brittney Lee, Kendelle Hoyer, Lissa Treiman, and Pamela Tu.

According to Rim, “All of these women are world-class talent, and their personal work should be seen and recognized within the community of animation, and also within the world of fine art.” After viewing a selection of their work online, I couldn’t agree more.

It should also be noted that many of the artists have created Valentine's Day cards in conjunction with the show. You can view and purchase them here. With that holiday right around the corner, this is great opportunity to find a unique card for that special someone in your life while also supporting a local artist.
